I have a fold-marked ripped-out piece of notebook paper up here on my bulletin board that a wise woman named Lisa gave me last November. She’d had it up on her refrigerator for some time, written out by hand from an article she read years ago in a local publication. It reads:
“The greatest work any of us do is to take responsibility for the energy we communicate to others, which is the energy we cultivate inside ourselves on a daily basis.”
The first time I read this quote, it immediately struck me as a very important idea. It's turned out to be one of those ideas that come alive as Life shows me what I need to know next.
Soon, from another direction came teachings about being the master of your own frequency. That means being aware of and consciously choosing your vibe, your mood, the energy you give off as you walk through your everyday life.
Most of the time, most of us are not paying much attention to the vibe we emanate . . . because it takes effort and because we have no idea just how much it affects our entire reality.
So, you know how when you first meet someone, you get an immediate felt sense of who they are? You take in a combination of things, visible and invisible. Visibly you take in their physical appearance, the sound of their voice, how they move, what they talk about. But you also probably notice whether they are scattered or focused, reserved or extended, and maybe whether they seem present or not. And perhaps you also notice whether they seem defended or fearful, or are emanating love and confidence, or a combo of any of these and more.
The invisible part of a person’s presence is their signature energy pattern; how they resonate, vibrate, feel to you.
Of course, it’s not static, this energy. Of course it shifts and changes like the weather. But there tends to be a ‘normal’ energy that a person gives out most of the time, right?
Sensing someone else’s signature energy pattern is not too hard. What is a real challenge is seeing your own. It’s like a fish trying to see water.
I’ve been working to see my own. I don’t know if I can ever see it accurately. But one thing I do know is that my outside world mirror back to me the energy vibration I feel from the inside.
Weirdly so.
I often take time in the morning to sit in a silent space of meditation and allow myself to settle and deepen. I then feel into the day and let love and joy arise in my heart (yeah, it takes practice and some days I fully fail and that is OK!!). I calibrate and choose my frequency by what I think and how I think about it. I let feelings of pleasure arise in my body that come when I think good and joyful thoughts. Then I rest in the pure somatic experience of spacious happiness, letting the feeling soak in, dropping the thinking that generated the body feeling initially.
It’s worth doing your own experiment.
How does your day go when you take the effort to calibrate your energy so that you feel good inside?
I get that it’s not so clear and not so simple as I make it out to be. It is a practice — but a practice that you can get better at and that you can master if you want to.
Just watch. When you are the master of your own vibrational frequency, you become the master of your life.
